What is the Fugger Kunstler Residenz?

The FKR is an artist residency located at the Fuggerschloss Wellenburg in Augsburg, Bavaria. Emerging artists are invited to live and work on the castle grounds –– this can range from artists simply looking for time and space to be, to artists wanting to exhibit and activate unconventional areas of the castle or property and beyond. 

Wellenburg is a historic castle, dating to the 12th century, that has belonged to the Fugger family since 1595. 

What is included in the Residency? 

The Fugger Kunstler Residenz is a free program. It provides each artist with private living accommodations and studio space on the property of Schloss Wellenburg. If extra support for the production of a specific work or exhibition is needed, we are open to exploring ideas.

How to apply?

Where is The Fugger Kunstler Residenz located?

The FKR is located in Augsburg, Bavaria, in southern Germany. The Schloss is surrounded by forests and fields, but 10 minutes from the center of Augsburg, a city of 350,000 people. Augsburg, founded by the Romans, is one of the oldest cities in Germany, and was the center of the Renaissance in Germany. Evidence of its rich history is notable in its sophisticated waterways, first built by the Romans, the Fuggerei (the oldest charitable foundation & public housing complex in the world) and cultural institutions including Maximilians Museum, Leopold-Mozart-Haus, Bertolt Brechthaus, Römisches Museum (Roman Museum). 

For those who enjoy the outdoors: the Castle is perfectly situated between fields and forests with endless trails. 

For those interested in city life: in addition to Augsburg, Munich is a 30-minute train ride. 

And lastly, for those interested in regional travel: Austria, Italy and Switzerland are all easily accessible by car or train. Allgau, Tyrol and the Alps are some of the most stunning, naturally beautiful places in Europe. 

Why was the FKR founded? 

The FKR was founded by Gabriella (Stoudemire) Fugger-Babenahusen to support emerging artists, to bring creative energy and new ideas to Augsburg, and open the door to creative projects. Gabriella is a native New Yorker who spent the first part of her career working in contemporary art.
