What is the Fugger Kunsthof Residency?
The Fugger Kunsthof is non-profit arts organization that offers a free artist residency at the Fugger Schloss Wellenburg in Augsburg, Bavaria.
Artists are invited to use the residency as they need –– this can range from artists simply looking for time and space to be, to artists preparing a specific exhibition or project, to those interested in engaging with and activating areas of the castle or surrounding property.
We are happy to work alongside artists to help them realize their particular visions and creative ideas.
What is included in the Residency?
The Kunsthof provides each participating artist with private living accommodations and studio space. If extra support for the production of a specific work or exhibition is needed, we are open to exploring and developing ideas alongside visiting artists.
What is provided?
Each artist receives:
Living accommodations
Studio space
Travel Costs
Exhibition and public programming opportunities
Support in connecting with curators, galleries, and institutions in Munich and Augsburg
Depending on available funding, we may also offer a stipend
Who can apply?
The program is open to visual artists working in painting, sculpture, installation, photography, video, mixed media, and related practices.
Are collaborative duos or collectives eligible?
Yes. However, please note that housing and studio space may need to be shared.
How long is the residency?
Residencies lasts approx. 1-2 months.
Can I bring my family or pets?
This depends on space availability and the nature of your proposal. We evaluate this on a case-by-case basis. Please mention this in your application.
Is there a cost to participate?
No. In exchange for the opportunity, we ask each resident to donate one of their artworks.

The Fugger Kunsthof is located in Augsburg, Bavaria, in southern Germany. The artist accommodations are located within the castle grounds, with studio space within the property and the adjacent Wellenburg Gutshof, a 300+ year old farmhouse.
Wellenburg is a historic castle, dating to the 12th century, that has belonged to the Fugger family since 1595. It is located in the countryside, and only 10 minutes from the center of Augsburg, a Renaissance city of 350,000 people.
For those who enjoy the outdoors: Wellenburg is perfectly situated between fields and forests with endless trails for exploring.
For those interested in city life: in addition to Augsburg, Munich is easily reachable (30 minute train, 1 hour drive). Slightly farther away but also easily reachable by train are, Berlin, Cologne, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt +more.
And lastly, for those interested in regional travel: countless destinations in Austria, Italy, France and Switzerland are easily accessible by car or train. In addition, nearby Allgau, Tyrol and the Alps are some of the most stunning, naturally beautiful places in Europe.
